Arren and I started with the tile around the sink. It was old outdated stuff and we had it all off in about 30 minutes.

Next up was the baseboard and crown molding. The baseboard was pretty easy. There weren't too many nails holding it on and it came off with a few pries of the handy old pry bar. The newer crown molding put up a fight though. It had crazy long nails and had been caulked around. Luckily the bathroom isn't very big so there weren't too many pieces to finagle loose.

Then it was onto the dreaded wallpaper. This is the only room in our house that had wallpaper. Notice the "that had" in the previous sentence.. It's all gone now! After around 6 hours of steaming and picking I managed to get it all free.

I used my mom's clothing steamer which worked fairly well. It was pretty small and not too powerful so I found it worked best if I peeled the thick paper off first and then used the steam to remove the thin paper and glue underneath. It was an easy job but time consuming.

We also removed the toilet so we could get to the wallpaper behind it too. We went ahead and bought a new toilet. The old one was... well old. And this new one uses half the amount of water per flush... Hello water savings! (In a related note our old toilet was removed during a snow storm and was promptly deposited on our deck... 2 weeks later and it's still there... we have sadly become those people with a toilet on their back deck..)

While removing the toilet we thought we'd go ahead and take down the toilet paper holder too. We soon discovered this was a much larger job than we first thought. Turns out the people who installed the holder loved it so much they cemented it to the wall... with wire mesh and everything. This explains the large hole in our bathroom wall in the pic above. I'm still baffled by the fact some one would cement a toilet paper holder to a wall... I mean who makes that kind of commitment?!

I also have big plans for that used-to-be closet. I want a built in. Not just any built in, one made by us! Here's a little inspiration.

The walls still have a lovely yellowish hue to them. I'm dying to get a coat of prime on those babies! But before prime, we still need to take down the lovely ball ceiling lights and replace them with a more stylish wall mount light. While doing this we are also replacing the vent fan and light over the shower. The vent fan is old, old, and more old, and just does not do its job anymore. Then the ceiling get's a layer of quarter inch drywall (but that's another post for another day) and our huge gaping hole in the wall gets patched.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12738993895799993005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2315659282160354162.post-45359673855581003402014-01-16T21:42:00.001-06:002014-01-16T22:08:30.776-06:00The Hiatus Is Officially OverAfter a long long long hiatus from blogging I'm back!

I'm sure as most of you already know, we are officially first time homeowners now. Take a moment to let that sink in because it still hasn't sunk in to my head and we've been living here for 3 and a half months.

We are also now a 4 person family. We added a adorable, goofy puppy. Well, he's not so much of a puppy anymore (even though he is only a little older than 6 months).

His name is Zeke the all white German Shepard but you can call him Zeke, or Zekey, or Pup-pups. Ash tolerates him as long as a foot of personal kitty bubble space is allowed between cat and dog at all times... This rarely happens.

We love it here. It's across from a lake and peaceful and serene and only 5 minutes from Green Acres. Since it's winter there hasn't been much happening on the farm. Well, besides 3 calves on the ground, a giant snow storm, busted water pipes ruining a whole room, and digging out the Green Acre dogs and cattle. It's been a heck of start to 2014. Oh did I mention a certain puppy chewed up the side of our less than a month old couch...

We've also started a bathroom project on the main bathroom in our new house. It's in complete middle of renovation mode and will be lightless after this weekend. It's our first big project and seems to keep getting bigger!

Stay tuned for updates on Green Acres as well as our new house adventures!

I also forgot to mention this post marks my 100th total post for the blog. Talk about a lot of writing and a lot of reading! I feel so lucky to have so many people who actually take the time to read little tid-bits of nothing of all that great importance. Here's to another 100!
Corynn is the owner and is so great to work with. Not to mention she is quick, up on all her invitation etiquette, and quite a perfectionist.

We met with her late last fall to go over our save the dates. Here is how they ended up looking...

I knew from the get go that I wanted to do a post card Save the Date. It's cheap, no envelope needed, and allowed us to incorporate a picture from our engagement session. I also came up with the snazzy wording on the back thanks to a little site called Pinterest. Each card only cost us $1 each and Corynn addressed them all for us.

This past spring we sat down and began to discuss invitations. Corynn had a million examples of different invitations she had made in the past with varying sizes, costs and colors. We ended up picking the fairly simple design below.

Our colors were navy and ivory which, were represented in every part of the invitation. To go with the vintage-y feel of the wedding we decided to add a lace ribbon down the side of each invite to personalize them a little more. Corynn added each lace ribbon by hand (I would have went crazy!). We had 3 inserts with info on the reception, directions to the ceremony and reception, and the RSVP post card.

All together each invite cost us around $4.50 each. Plus we had 65 cents of postage. Corynn also did our table numbers, program fans, and escort board lists. The table numbers were my favorite because they had a little bit of lace added to the tops to match our invites.

The program fans were made on very pretty scrap book paper so the backs were all kinds of colorful navy and ivory print.

One thing I did do myself was our bar sign that we put in an old vintage 8x10 picture frame. We wanted something to sit on the reception bar to let people know what was free and what wasn't. I used Pinterest and a friends own wedding bar sign for some inspiration and came up with this...

Not bad for a novice with a Mac!

That pretty much wraps up the paper details of the wedding. I'll be back later to discuss all the reception decor... which might be my longest post ever!

But because they have access to our barns at home we started giving them feed about a month ago in their own little pin.

They are eating machines! I've never seen such little calves eat so much... They lick their <strike>plates</strike> feeder clean. It doesn't matter how much we give them it will be gone the next day.
You can see in the picture below they were quite granny-rific!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">My parents had gifted them to us 3 years ago and ever since then they have been a sore spot with our other living room furniture.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">So for the past 3 years I've been mindlessly searching the web for 2 (cheap) lamps that I would love. I had found a few at target that I'd been mulling over for the past few months but somehow I could never pull the trigger on buying two $40 lamps plus new shades. All together that would have cost around $120... yikes!
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">That was when I stumbled upon this post from a fellow blogger... And the little tiny lamp's light bulb went off in my head. Spray paint them! It's a cheap solution and I can make them any color I want.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Then it was onto choosing a color. Two of the three lamps I liked from Target were a dark gray/orb color (the other was wood and that obviously wasn't happening). I headed to the local True Value to check out the spray paint selection and I was in luck, they had the perfect color! I picked up a can of X-O Rust Professional Gray Primer, a can of dark gray Rust-Oleum gloss protective enamel spray paint, and some blue painters tape.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I decided to take it one lamp at a time. I wasn't sure if my slick metal lamps would hold the paint very well. I taped off the little shade holder (I'm sure there is a professional term for this), the cord, and light bulb socket. Then it was prime time!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The primer covered up the gold and green really well. I let it dry and attacked the lamp with the darker paint. I stepped back and oh my I admired my pretty new dark gray lamp for about 5 minutes. I went ahead and did 2 coats of dark gray to make sure all the gold shinyness was covered.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Looking at my new babies I realized the only thing missing was new lamp shades. I quickly zeroed in on a few choices at Target and decided on a light tan linen with a wavy design. I thought the wavy design would play off the single dark gray color and the light tan matches our other living room furniture.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Here is the before and after..

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I'd say that's a pretty awesome upgrade! And it didn't cost an arm and a leg... All together the whole project cost about $70 for both lamps (including new shades) which saved me a whole 50 buckaroos! And the best part about this project is it is totally customizable. You could have spray painted these lamps any crazy color your heart desired.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Our wedding had a very nature friendly and vintage theme going on. In keeping with that theme I decided early on we were going to make our own tree slices from the huge stock pile of wood at Green Acres. I had been searching online and tree slices were going for $20 a pop. With our 21 tables at the reception that just wasn't going to fly. And when I found a customized brander in the shape of a heart with our initials I just couldn't pass up the DIY project.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Somehow in my head I had it work out that this project would be a piece of cake. That after a few fun hours we'd have 25 perfectly shaped tree slices. Boy was I wrong!
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We ended up with about 30 slices. None were the same shape but that's what made them unique. The biggest problem was crackage. A week after we had successfully branded about 10 slices almost half of them had cracks. After consulting a local wood expert he suggest we put them in a cool dark place. That trick seemed to work and we managed to avoid any major cracks from there on out.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We knew then that we would need at least 10 extras for backups. So my dad took up the chain saw and sliced log after log. Each slice was about an inch thick and 12-14 inches in diameter.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Our set up method was pretty simple. We took a large tree stump and strapped it to a rack wagon. Probably not the best or safest method, but it got the logs off the ground and made it much easier to make a straight cut.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Then we were on to branding which was a big hairy beast in it's own right. The first day we branded about 8 and only 1 ended up working out. We originally hoped to use an old mulberry tree but alas the wood was too hard to brand. So then we started using pine slices and had a lot more success.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Here are a few tips for branding...

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Make sure you have a good build up of really hot coals

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Leave the brand in the coals for around 5 minutes so it gets nice and hot

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Wet your wood... Pour water over the tree slice you are about to brand

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Use some sort of protective glove (or several protective gloves... we ended up using an Ove' Glove and 2 potholders)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Get 2 boards to press down on each side of the brand (we didn't do this until the very end... this method worked the best for an even brand... when we applied pressure to just the handle the brand started to warp and bend)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">After each branding session you might have to reset and straighten your brand

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">So basically that is what I have to offer. After completing the whole process I can totally understand why tree slices are so darned expensive to buy! Would we do this again?... probably not. We spent 4 Saturdays cutting wood and branding when we could have spent around $500 and just bought them online. But, in the end each tree slice was unique and special to us and we managed to get 21 great looking slices for the reception.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Below is a video of the whole process. It was taken pretty early on so we aren't using the 2 pieces of wood technique but you can get a good idea of what all went into the branding. Plus my dad imitates Turtle Man and I couldn't pass that up!
Yup, that's right folks you can now pin my posts and pictures to your Pinterest boards!

I'm a huge fan of Pinterest. I've used it for countless wedding ideas and lots of future home ideas. After searching online for about an hour I finally found a way to make my pictures pin-able! Just hover over them, click the giant red "P" and automatically be taken to your Pinterest page where you can save the picture along with the link to the blog post... You know so you can save your favorite posts and pics all in one place!

And for those of you wondering how I managed this magic, I refer you to this link. It pretty much walks you through it step by step. Do not be afraid of the html talk, I know nothing about this and was able to do it to it! If this country bumpkin can figure it out you can too!
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The ceremony was held at the University of Illinois Arboretum. Such a gorgeous place filled with flowers and trees and all things nature (including a pond and Japanese garden). We avoided the Japan House but managed to take pictures just about in every other location possible!
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Which leads me to my wonderful and lovely photographer Kara Kamienski. If you have a wedding coming up in the next year, 2 years, 5 years, I highly highly highly recommend you book her right now. She's just so easy to work with and her bubbly personality makes you feel comfortable and at ease when her and her assistant are snapping hundreds of pictures of you and your spouse.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Next topic... still relating to pictures... Because we booked pictures through Kara we just happened to be lucky enough to get Blake Ransom to video our wedding and compose a short video for... drum roll... free! Blake is new to the photography and videography wedding scene and was looking for experience this summer. But let me tell you this... he is no amateur. The short little clip he made of our day was absolutely perfect. I cried... a lot... and have watched it almost a million times now. Here it is incase you haven't seen it or want to relive the day.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">And one last thing about pictures... As you can probably tell from the video above Arren and I did a first reveal. I'm so so so glad we did this. For one Arren was a nervous wreck while he was getting ready. As soon as he saw me and got over the shock of seeing me all prettied up (it was pretty shocking!) he calmed right down and was ready for the wedding. Also, it allowed us to take 95% of the pictures before the ceremony. We had about 3 hours of pictures with us, our bridal party and our close family before the whole shindig even began. Our guests weren't left waiting after the ceremony to get their party on and we were much less stressed since we had most of the afternoon to snap up pics.

All I've got to say is sorry for neglecting you blog. But we seriously needed a break. You were getting so demanding and needy, I just couldn't take it anymore. Some time apart really made me appreciate you so much more anyway...

But now I'm back! With more blogging ideas than eva.

It's been 2.5 months since my last post. And somehow I've still gotten a trickle of page views a day. What are you people reading?! Perhaps you're reliving this year's baby calves, or are you coming back in hopes of a return post like this one.

Well today is the day... You trickle people must be jumping for joy! Or at least sitting there twiddling their fingers trying to act as enthused as possible.

Biggest thing that happened was this little marriage ceremony and all of a sudden... Whoop, I'm a wife!

So for the next few weeks some of you will have to bare with me as I discuss and relive my wedding deets (deets is short for details... at least it is in my mind... don't question my abbreviation methods... I'm married now... I can abbreviate how I see fit).

I'll be sure to throw in a few farm posts between the wedding madness. We've been bailing lots of hay. The other day I went up in the loft to throw down some cow gold and about fell back down the ladder when I saw how much was stacked up there... it's a bit ridiculous.

I've got some other big news but it'll have to wait. I know the suspense is probably killing you all...

Stay tuned for wedding deets, farm posts and the big reveal... I promise it's pretty amazing!

And just because I can't end a post without one single picture... here are some babies!

What ever you want to call it, the last Momma calved a couple weeks ago!
The Momma is Robin, that pretty roan cow back yonder in the picture above. Her little baby is doing wonderful. We are lucky to have such a good heard. They have small calves that, most of the time, hit the ground running.

I took these pictures below a few days ago since the baby is quite a bit older now.

She's a little cutie. Oh did I mention the new baby is a heifer... That's 9 heifers and 2 bulls total. Year of the heifer indeed!

I'd like to do a post soon of how the calves look now they are a bit older. Kind of a recap of all the little boogers. This may be a challenge since some of them are in the summer pasture where escaping from portraits are much easier. But hopefully that post will be coming soon!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12738993895799993005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2315659282160354162.post-80911882702663490322013-06-05T06:13:00.000-05:002013-06-05T06:13:07.345-05:00Kitty BittysKittens are in the air... or barn.. or in this case bucket..

We've got a litter of 3 (maybe 4) fluff balls. My dad found 1 of the little rascals 2 nights ago roaming around the barn meowing his poor little kitty heart out. We brought him up to the porch and gave him a little milk. We weren't totally sure of where his mother was or if she was even still around. Then I went back out to the barn and saw 2 other little munchkins romping around with Momma following close behind. So I brought little Bubba back out to the barn and they've been a happy little family since!
I'm starting to feel like a broken record! This has been the year of the heifer. 8 of the 10 babies, in fact, have been heifers.

I stopped by after work one evening to find this little girl curled up by Momma in the front pasture.

Her front legs are pretty wobbly. She's 2 weeks old now and getting around fine, but the left front leg still likes to give out on her. She was more than likely in a bad position inside the cow. Her Momma's a little thing and I can't image there is much room for a big baby like her!

Then this week we had this pretty little baby. Her Momma is roan so we weren't too surprised when her calf was roan too. I've decided that she looks like a Wilma.

The day she was born my dad called to notify me. Then, while we were on the phone, I heard lots of barking and my dad say "oh she's out... how did that happen". I later got the full story..

Somehow little Wilma had gotten out and made her way to the gate. She was frantically trying to get to her Momma while Elsie was barking her mad little doggie head off. My dad walked up, yelled at Elsie to knock it off, and then tried to open the gate and get the baby in, while at the same time keeping Momma from getting out. It was then that little Wilma charged him, hit him square in the knees and then took off running into the pasture towards her Momma... Cheeky little thing!

Only one more cow left to calve for this year. Odds are it will have to be a bull.. right?

In the mean time, the other calves are starting to really take off and grow. Here are a few pics of the April babies.

Fast forward 82 posts and just over 4000 page views and you'll wind up today, right here, reading this.

I can't image this blog having this many page views in just a year. That pretty much equals out to almost 12 page views a day or 48 views per post. Who are you people?! I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure your amazing... or easily entertained... either way I like it!

I started this with the intention of no one wanting to read about our dinky little farm and more as a way to look back and remember the past. It's really been great to get feed back from all of you. I've started to look for more ways to take pictures of what we are doing around the farm. Winter is always a slow time, but you awesome readers have stuck with me.

Let's hope this next year is just as great and just as exciting. Look for lots of wedding detailed posts after July. I'd love to post about all those small details now, but I don't want to give away anything for the big day!

Arren and I are also still looking for that house. Hopefully someday I can post about that. But until then, be prepared for lots of summer posts from the farm!

And finally I guess I'd like to say thanks for taking the time out of your busy days to stop by and read. It gives me warm fuzzies every time I log on and see one more person has stopped by to read today's post.

Here's to the next year!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12738993895799993005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2315659282160354162.post-44373536162807987002013-05-17T20:40:00.003-05:002013-05-17T20:40:51.694-05:00Summer PastureSo we've fixed the fence and now we move the cows.

We did this over the weekend. There is a lack of pictures in the post because... well because I was working and had no time to snap pics. Right before we went out to corral the cattle my dad lost his phone in the mud (we found it) and then he insisted we put our phones in the truck. No phone = no pictures. I'll give you the low down though.

So it was muddy. Like really muddy. Like so muddy that we had to set up a temporary pin. This pin was key as we wouldn't have to back the trailer into said mud, get stuck, and then drag and fling mud into the yard.

Our first goal was to separate our cows with out calves and the bull. They would be the first load. My dad worked them out of the heard while I ran the gait. We got them in the barn, deloused them, and moved them into the temporary pin. This first group didn't want to get on the trailer. It took a good 5 minutes of pushing and shoving to get cooperation and they finally all loaded.

One trek across town later and 3 cows and 1 bull had successfully been moved.

Then it was back to load the rest. We worked 4 cows with their calves into the trailer and delivered them. Our cows were happy, running around in the tall grass. They'd arrived at their summer home!

We left 6 cows at home. 3 of them were the ones who had just calved in April and the other 3 were to calve soon or later this summer. We've split our cows into these two groups. 1 group goes to the summer pasture with the bull. Then in late June or early July we head out load up the bull and calves (if we can catch them) and bring them home.

Hopefully sometime soon I can sneak out to the pasture and snap some pics. I'll be sure to share if I do! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12738993895799993005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2315659282160354162.post-41379152220914813092013-05-13T20:15:00.000-05:002013-05-13T20:16:04.656-05:00Fixing FenceWe headed out to the summer pasture this weekend to walk and fix fence so that we could move half our heard across town to grassy goodness.

It went very well. The whole time we only used 2 new insulators and 2 new posts. My dad was hoping to mow around the fence, but it was way too wet for a mower. We had to wear our mud boots.

I accidentally snapped the photo above, but it showcases the mud boot-y-ness of the situation. This picture actually happened right after we found this "little guy".

It's a snapping turtle kind of spring. We I came up upon this dude in the grass I quickly turned back ans whispered to my dad "snapping turtle". In my mind it makes total sense that a snapping turtle would attack a loud being moving towards it.

But back to fixing fence. I love the pasture we get to use in the summer. Thanks to a family friend our cows get some good eats and he gets a manicured pasture. It has a creek running through it and lots of trees around the creek. Which, gives way to beautiful scenes like this..

And this...

Here is where the front of the pasture ends. For the past 4 years we've kept the cows in the front pasture. But my dad is bound and determined this summer to get them into the back pasture as well. This will be a huge undertaking... it's an overgrown mess.

The back fence has to pass over the creek. It makes for an interesting summer if there is a lot of rain and water.

And here is the front of the pasture... so pretty!
Tune in next time as we moooove the cows... :)
They peaked in late 2003 due to Mad Cow issues but this month they surpassed those prices.

So it's a good time to be a cattle farmer, right?

To that I answer... meh.

Corn prices are still riding high and with late planting across the Midwest it looks like they are going to stay that way, at least for a little while longer. When inputs are high, your final output product has to reflect that high price. Luckily, here at Green Acres, we have a deal worked out with a close family friend for a corn source. But when that runs out, our feeder cattle have to be sold. It's a lot of keeping track of supply and monitoring how long it will last us.

The severe drought last year caused a lot of small and mid-sized operations to have to sell off their herds. No summer or fall rain meant low crop yields and burnt up pasture ground. We struck gold last year in the form of corn stalk bales, otherwise we would have been in the same boat.

The price of calves has risen with the price of fats. We use to be able to buy 5-10 feeder calves a year for our feedlot. But this past year we have bought a total of 0, zilch, nodda... Again luckily we've been able to increase the size of our own heard. So basically the 11-14 babies we raise every year go from Momma to feed lot to hamburger. Heartless, I know, but keeps our costs down substantially. We are a small farm and unique in the fact that we feed out our own calves. We see our calves hit the ground as babies and then haul them off a year and a half later to sadly meet their certain demise. Most large operations will raise calves and then sell them off to others to be finished on grain.

With all these negatives there are of course positives...

Like I said the price of fat cattle is high. Next Monday we will be taking 5 Green Acre grown premium shorthorn beefs to the sale barn. Prices are extremely high compared to just 5 years ago. We still get excited when we see how much each calf brings per pound. But to any other operation this is just normal business.

I would never want to be forced to sell off our whole cattle heard. It's our hobby. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a green pasture full of red, white and roan cattle with adorable babies running around. It's a lot of work, way more than the pay off, but we don't mind it at all. It's how I grew up and I wouldn't trade it for the world!

With being on the verge of summer start looking for more posts. This weekend should be busy. We are hopefully taking half the heard to their summer time pasture but before we do that we've got to walk and fix fence. This weeks rain will put a damper on our ability to get the pasture ready. But like my dad said if we don't get it this weekend, there is always the next.

Plus Sunday is Mother's Day so go home, hug your mom and take her somewhere nice!

And because I can't just type up a post with no pics, here is one for your viewing pleasure.

Yes he's sticking his tongue out at me... he's a cheeky calf!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12738993895799993005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2315659282160354162.post-15202955654304868032013-04-30T20:07:00.000-05:002013-04-30T20:08:56.355-05:00April BabesI'm behind in my posts. In the past 3 weeks we've had 3 and a half calves.

The half part is sad and not cute at all so if you want to scroll on to cuteness do so now...

Mary aborted her calf. She was about a month and a half from calving. We have no clue why she aborted. We are sad and disappointed that the baby didn't make it, but we are glad Mary aborted like she should have and everything else went OK for her.

On a happier note we've got 3 other healthy babies.

This pretty little girl was born first. She's almost 3 weeks old now and doing great.

The second baby is also a girl. She was born a week ago. And last week when we went to get mom and baby into the barn it was raining cats and dogs. It's been raining lots of those lately so instead of making the baby walk through the muddy barn lot we took them through my parent's yard. This induced an episode of Elsie barking drama...

Once we got them inside, little baby found a nice warm spot in the straw to lay down.

She's a pretty thing with a red and white tail. A day after she was born she came out of the barn to explore the muddy lot.

Here she is almost a week old. She's one of my favorite calves so far. She's full of attitude and fuzzy and cute as can be! In the evenings we've been moving mothers and babies into the barn lot so they can get inside. This little baby rebels for being forced into a muddy barn lot. The other night she came right up to the barn door, looked at us and mooed in disgrace.

Then, Sunday we had yet another baby girl! That makes 3 heifers on the ground for April. The poor little thing is made like a deer. She's small boned and so far has only been able to find one faucet (as my dad calls it). She needs a bit of time to get her footing and in the mean time I think we'll call her teeny.
It was nice outside and I was mowing while Arren rode the four wheeler around. Green Acres is right down the rode from a dredge ditch. It's like a creek but not as cool.

So there I was mowing along and Arren stops the four wheeler right in front of me. I mouthed "what" and he motioned me over. "There's something I want to show you"... "What?"... "A turtle"... "Oh!". I hopped on the back of the four wheeler and we were off.

By the time we got to the turtle's temporary home he had burrowed and lodged himself in the water and mud on the other side of the ditch. Arren wanted mud boots to try to catch him. I wanted nothing to do with this turtle because it was a snapper with an appetite for fingers.

We rode back to the house. Arren put on some boots. My dad gave him a tarp strap. "The turtle can bite this and you can get his tale". The strap was only about 5 inches long... I proceeded to tell Arren that I wasn't about to marry a man with 9 fingers.

Much to my dismay we rode back out to Mr. Turtle... in my mind it was soon to be a blood bath. Arren went into the water. I threw him a stick. He worked the turtle out of the mud. Stuck his hand in the water and pulled out this dude. Turtle wasn't happy. I snapped a few pics. Arren put him back in the water. The turtle went AWOL and attacked...

Just kidding!

He swam away.
Don't try this at home kids! We've moved onto the ole square bales. Our cows get 6 bales a night. We are working our way through some very moldy last cutting hay to get to the decent hay stacked on back. I have worries and trepidations when I'm breathing in the dust from those moldy bales but then again... the cows have to eat that stuff so what can it hurt!

We open each bale and toss it down into the hay feeders below. And by the time we feed the next night, the cows have hungrily consumed all 6 bales.

The babies get fed downstairs in there own little get away spot. They can come in a lay down in fresh straw and munch on some yum-yums!
It's been a while... don't worry I'm back with a post with enough cuteness it's bound to make up for my lack-o-postin.

We had a new baby last Saturday. We were at the Beef Expo (yes, there is an expo for beef cattle) so we had a family friend check a cow we thought could calve any day. He called with the good news that we were now the proud parents of a bouncing baby bull.

This is one of the few Mommas who doesn't actually have a name. Just a number... well a former number. She use to be number 7. So I call her 7. Not to be confused with the number 30 she actually has on her ear tag. I can never remember that 7 is now 30.

So 7 had this little baby. And everyone is doing quite well after "the incident".

The second day Momma 7 was penned up, she discovered she could stick her head through our temporary gates to get to the calves feed. My dad saw this going on and gave her a swift kick in the butt which, sent her into a conniption.

She managed to tear down our temporary gates with her head still in them, soon dislodged her head, but then lodged her whole body in a little hole we have this set-up for the calves to come in and out of their small pin. Until the other day, no cow had ever attempted to squeeze through said hole.

It was a struggle, but she made it.. somehow. My dad said he thought he was going to have to get the saw and cut her loose (a fun task no doubt) but then she wiggled freed and only lost a few patches of hair.

With the calf still inside the pin, my dad took his time resetting the gates and soon the cow was politely mooing to be let back in with her calf. So my dad opened the gate and in she came.

A friend called naming rights at the Beef Expo and so this little dude's name is fittingly Expo.

We've got one more cow left to calve and that should be the last one for another month or two. Big Momma (the cow) is getting close so expect another baby post soon!
It's another baby girl. We walked into the barn Friday night and saw her and Momma Annie standing there. So we penned them up and got to work! The poor little baby hadn't eaten yet so we headed inside to mix up a bag of colostrum. Baby calves need the colostrum from their mother's milk in the first hour or so after being born and we wanted to make sure she had her share.

Momma Annie was a bit concerned but this is her 11th calf and she's a pro by now. In fact, last year Annie had a calf in March so this little baby was another huge surprise. Literally, a HUGE surprise... The baby is a big one. Especially for a heifer. But she's also very strong and a bit hard headed. We could tell it must have been a long birth because if you listened closely, the baby had a bit of a wheeze when she breathed. That means she probably didn't get all the mucus and gunk cleared out of her airways. But as the days go on she'll get stronger and soon she'll be out running with the other calves.

Speaking of other calves, here is Bruce. He's taken quite a growth spurt over the past few weeks.
So what do you think the new baby's name should be? My dad suggested Valentine since it's so close to Valentine's Day.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12738993895799993005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2315659282160354162.post-46362418443909531932013-01-24T20:17:00.002-06:002013-01-24T20:17:44.599-06:00Ice Ice BabyIn case you hadn't ventured outside (or if you're a hibernating bear), the beginning of the week brought a deep cold snap all across the Northern Midwest. Green Acres was no exception. With temperatures not rising above 20 degrees, the ground froze hard and that meant water tanks were too.

We usually combat this frozen water with tank heaters. These nifty little things are suppose to thaw the ice in our water tanks so the cows can have 24-7 access to fresh water. Key words in that last sentence would be "suppose to".

Nothing at Green Acres is brand new especially our random supply of tank heaters. After being plugged in, many, to much of our disdain, just sit there soon frozen in a 6 inch thick ice cube.

Tuesday was brutal. It was the first time in about 2 years we had to dig out the ax to break holes in the ice so that cows could get to the water below.

Then the cows venture over and take a sip of the no doubt frigid water. Poor dears can't have hot chocolate with the little marshmallows.. I'd bet they'd love some though.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12738993895799993005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2315659282160354162.post-87949571686532423472013-01-22T18:42:00.003-06:002013-01-22T18:42:40.817-06:00IsisWe've had another calf. Another surprise. We were out feeding the cows and my dad just happened to look in between the feeders and see a new calf standing, looking at us with big questioning eyes.

Then we went... Uh.. who's calf is that? And who was even close enough to have a calf? We searched the barn. No cows were looking guilty. None looked like they had given birth in the past day. No cow was searching frantically for her calf. This was proving to be tricky.

So we took the little baby heifer around the barn and all of a sudden a concerned moo surfaced from the front. It was number 4 and she had just realized her baby was now being pushed around by us.

So we sorted them out and put them into their own stall.

Poor little baby hadn't nursed in a while and was starving. So much so that she seemed to have forgotten how to nurse. We worked with her for about 45 minutes and finally she seemed to remember what to do. Most calves are born naturally knowing what to do to find food. This poor little girl went into panic mode and seemed to mistake every mud clod hanging off her mom as a source of milk.

It's been two days and she's doing much better. Due to the very cold temperatures we are having to kick off this week we decided to keep momma and calf pinned up. But they don't seem to mind having a dry warm place to eat and lay down.
